Manahawkin, NJ - If you have diabetes, pre-diabetes or want to know more about diabetes come and join us at Southern Ocean Medical Center’s annual Diabetes Health Fair. The event takes place on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Southern Ocean. There will be free health screenings, lectures and educational information.

Southern Ocean endocrinologist, Sajjad Hussain, M. D. and registered dieticians and certified diabetes educators will be on hand to share valuable information. Free health screenings will include blood pressure, total cholesterol, blood sugar, stroke risk and foot exams. There will be an “Ask the Endocrinologist” session from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and a lecture on “Understanding Carbohydrates” from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“Our goal of this event is to help people learn more about diabetes, treatment options, and diabetes products,” says diabetes nurse educator Eddi Nitting.

Manahawkin, NJ - Join us for a night out with the girls on Wednesday, October 26, when the women of southern Ocean County will once again be treated to an evening devoted to their personal health and wellness. During the hours of 5:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. the first floor of Southern Ocean Medical Center will be transformed into one of the region's most comprehensive health events, featuring free health screenings, literature, educational seminars, and opportunities to meet Southern Ocean physicians, interactive displays, free gifts and more!

It's all part of Southern Ocean County Hospital's 20th annual Women's Health Night, scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., and guests are asked to enter through the main entrance and register at the Women's Health Night Registration Desk in the main lobby. Physician lectures offered this year include: Obstetrician and Gynecologist Michael Sze, M.D. speaking on Osteoporosis at 5:30 p.m.; Cardiologist Timothy Slavin, D.O. speaking on Women and Heart Disease: Understanding Your Cholesterol at 6:30 p.m. and Neurologist Tommasina Papa-Rugino, M.D. speaking on Handling Headaches at 7:30 p.m.

Prior to the event a free lipid profile (cholesterol screening) will take place. Women who would like to take part in the lipid profile should come to the Beach Plum Conference Room at SOCH at 1140 Route 72 West on Monday MORNING, October 24 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 am. Fasting for 12 hours is required prior to having blood drawn. That is why the blood draw will take place in the morning. The lipid profile results will be available during Women's Health Night on October 26.

A variety of health screenings are also planned for the evening. The free screenings include: blood pressure, blood sugar, body fat analysis, bone densitometry, colorectal cancer, skin cancer, balance, foot screenings, hearing screenings, pulmonary function and pap smears. Participants wishing to have a free pap smear are required to schedule an appointment through 1-800-DOCTORS.

In addition to the free lectures and health screenings, Women's Health Night 2011 at Southern Ocean County Hospital also features a wealth of information on maternity services, nutrition, fitness, cancer, cardiology and other health issues related to women. Women will enjoy the dozens of interactive educational displays hosted by healthcare professional representing Southern ocean services.
